Light
Maxillaria grow best is bright light, similar to cattleya. Use some shade and avoid direct sunlight to prevent scorching on the leaves. If growing indoors, place plants in a East-facing window, or a South-facing window with a sheer curtain.

Temperature
Most species prefer intermediate-warm temperatures, ranging from 70-80F during daytime to 55-60F during nighttime. There are some cooler growing species that can tolerate temps down to 50F, if kept drier.

Water
Maxillaria can be heavy drinkers and shouldn't go completely dry. Water thoroughly and frequently, watering when the media is drying at the top. The pseudobulbs will start to shrivel if they are not receiving enough water. Using distilled or rain water is best.
Never use ice to water orchids!

Humidity
Maxillaria will thrive in high humidity, especially if mounted. Humidity above 50% is ideal. With increased humidity, increase air flow. A humidifier can be used to raise humidity in the home.

Fertilizer
Fertilize regularly in the growing season, about once per week using a balanced fertilizer (i.e. 10-10-10) at 1/4 to 1/2 the strength on the label.

Repotting
Pot in a moisture retentive media such as fine to medium bark or sphagnum moss. Maxillaria also do well mounted with a layer of moss. Repot when the media starts to break down or when the plant starts to climb out of the pot - about every 2 years. Always use a sterile cutting tool when cutting any plant parts.
