  • Light

Myrmecophila (also previously known as Schomburgkia) are grown similarly to Cattleya, however, they can be acclimated to nearly full sun. These plants love bright light. If growing in the home, they should be kept near a South window.

  • Temperature

These are warm growing plants, doing well in temperatures between 65-90F. Room temperature in the home will work great!

  • Water

Plants do best mounted and watered every day. Potted plants should be allowed to dry completely before being watered again.

Some species require very quick wet/dry cycles and will appreciate watering in the morning in order to dry by evening.

Water frequency should be reduced in the fall and spring months, and gradually increased again in spring.

Never use ice to water orchids!

  • Humidity

It's essential for mounted plants to be grown in high humidity (>60%). Potted plants will grow fine in lower humidity levels, especially if they are on a consistent watering schedule.

    Increase airflow as humidity increases.

  • Fertilizing

Fertilize and water regularly in the growing seasons. A regular strength, balanced formula (i.e. 10-10-10) used at 1/4 to 1/2 strength is recommended during growing seasons, but should be stopped completed in winter.

  • Repotting

As stated, these plants do best when they are mounted. They can grow very large and put out multiple growths per year. Mount onto tree fern slabs, wood slabs, bark, etc. with a bit of sphagnum moss to retain some moisture at the roots. Some species in this genera require very quick wet/dry cycles and may not tolerate being potted.

If potting, use a well-draining, medium to large bark mix. Repot every 2 years or if the media is breaking down or the plants are climbing out of their pots. Repot when new growth is just starting.

Use a sterile cutting tool when cutting any plant parts, including dead roots.
