Light
Phalaenopsis grow easily in intermediate-shade, about 1000-2000 foot-candles, depending on the plant. If indoors, place plants near an East or West window. South windows are acceptable if using a sheer curtain. These plants also grow well under artificial light, such as LEDs - aim for about 10000 lumens per square foot.
-
Temperature
Phalaenopsis thrive in hot environments, but can be grown in more intermediate temperatures. Temps can range between 75-95F, and down to 60F at night. With increased temperature and humidity, increase airflow. Cooler night temps down to 55F for several weeks in the fall will help initiate flowering. Hybrid phalaenopsis can flower anytime during the year.
-
Water
Phalaenopsis do not have pseudobulbs like many other orchids do, so they are not tolerant to prolonged periods without water - they should not completely dry out. Water thoroughly - water just when the media is approaching dryness. If growing outdoors or in a greenhouse, this may be every other day, or every day for mounted plants. In a home, this may be once o twice weekly depending on the media. Do not leave water sitting on the leaves or in the crown, as this can promote rot and fungal or bacterial infection.
Never use ice to water orchids!
-
Humidity
Phalaenopsis hail from humid, mostly tropical forests, and will benefit from high humidity. When possible, keep humidity above 50%, but increase airflow as the humidity increases.
-
Fertilizer
Fertilize on a regular schedule using a balanced fertilizer (i.e. 10-10-10) at 1/4 to 1/2 the strength on the label. Apply every other watering or a few times per month during active growth.

Repotting
Most Phalaenopsis, especially hybrid plants, are not too picky with root disturbances and for the most part can be repotted anytime of year. However, for some species, the most ideal time is to repot right after flowering.
Phalaenopsis will grow best in medium bark mixes where water can drain easily and humid air can circulate around the roots. If growing in moss, be mindful of the watering schedule.
Repot plants in a container that will just fit the roots and back fill with media to stabilize the plant.Always use sterile cutting tools when cutting any plant parts.
