Light
Vanda are light loving plants, most will appreciate bright light with little shade. Avoid direct sunlight during midday. Some types of Vanda, such as strap-leafed varieties, will prefer partial shade. Leaf color is a good indication of adequate light - bright green, almost chartreuse colored leaves are ideal, sometimes purple/red coloring on the leaves or leaf edges may appear in sufficient lighting.
-
Temperature
Vanda prefer warm temperatures with day temps between 70-85F and night temps between 60-70F. Large temperature drops between day and night help initiate blooming.
-
Water
Vanda will do best when they are mounted or hung bare-root, though there are some Vanda that prefer being potted, such as terete or terrestrial Vanda. For mounted Vanda, water well every day - up to twice per day in hot, dry weather. Water plants in the morning to avoid fungal issues. If potted, water when the media becomes completely dry.
Never use ice to water orchids!
-
Humidity
Mounted/bare root Vanda require high humidity, ideally around 80%. Potted plants will do fine in the lower humidity on a consistent watering schedule.
Increase airflow with increased humidity. -
Fertilizing
Vanda are heavy feeders, they should be fertilized every other watering. Use a balanced fertilizer (i.e. 20-20-20) diluted to 1/2 to 1/4 strength on the label. Reduce in the fall and winter, resuming gradually in spring or with new growth.
-
Repotting
If mounted or bare-root, Vanda will not need repotting. Potted Vanda should be repotted every 2 years or when media is breaking down. Repot when new growth is just starting.
Use a sterile cutting tool when cutting any plant parts.
