Dendrobium bigibbum var. compactum 'Zechia Lynn'
Dendrobium bigibbum var. compactum 'Zechia Lynn'
Perhaps the most well known phalaenopsis-type Dendrobium and a parent of many hybrids, Dendrobium bigibbum is a rock-dwelling (lithophytic) orchid native to Northern Queensland, Australia. It thrives in bright sunlight and blooms with striking purple-pink flowers that are shaped similarly to those of some Phalaenopsis species (though not related to Phalaenopsis).
This cultivar, var. compactum, is a compact variety and forms tight clumps of short pseudobulbs ranging from 4-6 inches in length.
It needs consistent moisture during active growth and prefers warm to hot temperatures. Watering should be reduced in the fall and winter, and fertilizing should be stopped completely between October through April.
They are very hardy plants and are known to be drought resistant.
These plants will flower best when given very bright light, but avoid harsh afternoon sunlight. A south window is a good place for these in the home!
Blooming size plants in 4" pots.
