Dendrobium victoriae-reginae

Dendrobium victoriae-reginae was first described in 1897 during the "Orchidelirium" of the Victorian Era and was named for Queen Victoria. This was a time from roughly 1818-1920s when many rich Europeans became obsessed with collecting orchids. Expeditions to collect plants from the wild were often dangerous, and many 'orchid hunters' died hoping to bring wild orchids back to their home countries.

This species is native to the Philippines in high elevation climates, preferring more shade, higher humidity, and cooler temperatures. In the home environment, we recommend potting these in sphagnum moss or tree fern fiber to keep moisture higher. They do very well mounted, as they tend to grow pendulously, but should be watered often when on a mount.

Plants are deciduous (meaning they drop their leaves in fall-winter) and will bloom on bare, mature canes.
The blooms are a beautiful blue-lavender shade that tends to be more "blue" when grown in cooler conditions.

They can bloom freely throughout the year but they are known to typically bloom in spring to early summer.

We are offering a handful of mounted plants and the rest are potted in 2" pots.

These are still seedling plants and should be blooming size in about 2 years.

*Note that some leaves are yellowing/dropping which is a normal process for deciduous dendrobiums.
